In the shadow of the Iles d'Hyeres and the fame of Saint-Tropez, the Ile des Embiez remains one of the least known gems of the Mediterranean. Protected from the excesses of mass tourism, it offers a rare combination: unspoilt beaches, exceptional marine life, an authentic Provencal village and a timeless atmosphere. From Saint-Tropez by boat, the Embiez make for a perfect full-day destination for those who want to venture beyond the familiar spots of the gulf.
The Ile des Embiez: what you need to know
The Ile des Embiez is part of a small archipelago off Six-Fours-les-Plages in the Var. It is privately owned by the Paul Ricard group since 1958, but open to visitors. The island is home to the Institut Oceanographique Paul Ricard, one of the most important marine research centres in the Mediterranean, as well as a marina, restaurants, a wine cellar and hotels. Its surface area is approximately 95 hectares with 10 kilometres of coastline to explore.
Distance and sailing time from Saint-Tropez
The Ile des Embiez lies approximately 30 to 35 nautical miles from Saint-Tropez. At 25 to 30 knots, allow 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30. Aboard the Pershing 70 Aqua or the Sunseeker Predator 65, capable of 40 to 45 knots, you can be there in under 50 minutes. This makes it a genuine full-day destination with plenty of time on the island itself.
Recommended itinerary from Saint-Tropez: depart early at around 8.30 to 9.00 from the Quai Claude Meiffret. Head due west towards the Embiez. Arrive at the island's marina or anchor in one of its coves. Lunch on the island. Explore the coastline in the late afternoon. Depart around 16.30 to 17.00 to be back in Saint-Tropez before 19.00.
The best anchorages on the Ile des Embiez
The Anse de la Cougou
The largest anchorage on the island, facing due south, with a sandy bottom ideal for anchoring. The water is calm and clear, with depths of 8 to 10 metres. It is the most popular spot in summer: arrive before 11.00 to be sure of finding room.
The eastern coastline
The eastern coast of the Ile des Embiez is the wildest and least frequented part of the island. Rocky cliffs drop into deep blue water with some of the richest marine life in the area. Freedivers find grouper, octopus and crayfish in abundance. Anchoring here is trickier due to the rocky bottom: a long chain is recommended.
The Institut Oceanographique Paul Ricard
The Institut Oceanographique Paul Ricard is one of the island's highlights. Open to the public, it features aquariums with Mediterranean species, exhibitions on the marine ecosystem and educational activities for children. Entry is around 8 to 10 euros depending on the season and a visit takes approximately one hour. It is a great way to round off a boat day with children.
