Calanques de l'Esterel by boat from Saint-Tropez: red rock and turquoise water

Leaving the Gulf of Saint-Tropez behind for an hour and arriving at the Calanques de l'Esterel is a genuine shock: the landscape changes completely. Where the gulf offers granite, pine and fine sand, the Esterel delivers volcanic rock in shades of deep red and orange, plunging into turquoise water of extraordinary clarity. This is one of the most striking coastal landscapes in the whole Mediterranean, less than 45 minutes from the Quai Claude Meiffret by fast boat.

What are the Calanques de l'Esterel?

The Massif de l'Esterel is a volcanic mountain range that runs along the coast between Saint-Raphael and Cannes. Its coastline is a series of calanques cut into the red porphyry rock, alternating narrow inlets, rocky headlands and small sheltered coves. The contrast between the deep red rock and the turquoise water is unlike anything else on the French Riviera.

Distance and sailing time from Saint-Tropez

The first calanques of the Esterel begin around Saint-Raphael, approximately 20 nautical miles from Saint-Tropez. At a cruising speed of 25 to 30 knots, allow 45 to 60 minutes of navigation. On board the Pershing 70 Aqua at 45 knots, you can be there in under 30 minutes. The Esterel works as a full-day trip: depart early, spend the morning in the calanques, lunch on board or in Saint-Raphael, and head back to Saint-Tropez in the early afternoon.

The best calanques to visit

Calanque du Maubois

One of the most accessible calanques of the Esterel, with a sheltered anchorage and excellent snorkelling on the rocky bottom. The red rock walls create a natural amphitheatre that traps the heat of the sun. Arrive before 11.00 in July and August to find room.

Calanque de la Gaillarde

A wider calanque with sandy approaches and clear water. The red cliffs reflected in the turquoise sea make this one of the most photographed spots in the Esterel. The anchorage is comfortable and the surroundings peaceful even in summer.

Cap Dramont and Ile d'Or

The Ile d'Or off Cap Dramont is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the Esterel: a small island of red rock topped by a medieval-style tower. The water around the island is exceptionally clear and the seabed rich. Anchoring is possible in calm conditions.

Which boat for the Esterel?

Given the distance, the Esterel trip works best on the faster boats in the Octopussy fleet. The Pershing 70 Aqua, Sunseeker Predator 65 or Pardo 50 all make the crossing quickly and comfortably. A professional skipper is essential: the rocky coastline of the Esterel requires local knowledge and precise handling. All Octopussy premium yachts include a professional skipper in the rate.
