eFoil in Saint-Tropez: everything you need to know before getting started

Some activities change a stay in Saint-Tropez. Not the terraces, not even the hidden coves. eFoil is something else entirely. It is the moment when you literally take off above the water, propelled in silence by an electric motor, and realise you are flying. Octopussy offers eFoil sessions in Saint-Tropez from the Quai Claude Meiffret.

What exactly is an eFoil?

An eFoil is a surfboard equipped with a submerged foil and a silent electric motor. The foil is an underwater wing that, once you reach a certain speed, lifts you out of the water. You fly 30 to 80 centimetres above the surface in near-total silence at speeds of up to 35 km/h. Speed is controlled by a Bluetooth remote you hold in your hand. No combustion engine, no noise, no wake.

Do you need prior experience to ride an eFoil?

No prior level is required. eFoil is learned quickly, much faster than surfing or wakeboarding. Most riders achieve lift-off during their very first session. The learning curve unfolds in three natural stages: lying on the board to build confidence, then on your knees, then standing. Falls are harmless: the motor stops automatically as soon as you release the remote, and the life jacket takes care of the rest.

How long does an eFoil session last?

Sessions take place directly in the waters of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, departing from the Quai Claude Meiffret. An introductory session typically lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour, which is more than enough to progress and experience the full sensation of flight. For riders who want to progress faster, it is also possible to take the eFoil on board selected boats in the fleet, particularly the Numarine 52.

Is eFoil safe?

Practised under normal conditions with proper supervision, eFoil is a safe activity. The remote is connected to your wrist by a safety cord that automatically cuts the motor if you let go. The board is designed to be stable and the foil remains fully submerged. Equipment provided by Octopussy includes a life jacket and helmet. A safety briefing is given before every session.
