Winter boat layup in the Var: complete guide and checklist

The boating season in the Var typically ends between October and November. Once the Voiles de Saint-Tropez regatta has passed, the gulf gradually empties and every boat owner faces the same question: how to lay up properly for winter. Getting it right means finding your boat in perfect condition come spring, avoiding unpleasant surprises and protecting the value of your investment.

Winter storage options in the Var

Dry storage

Dry storage is the most recommended solution for boats up to 10 metres. The boat is lifted out of the water, cleaned, treated and stored on cradles in a shed or outdoors under cover. Advantages: no osmosis risk, no marine growth, no mooring concerns. Drawback: relaunching in spring requires a crane and generates additional costs. Boatyards around the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and Grimaud offer this service at rates ranging from 50 to 120 euros per linear metre per month.

Keeping the boat in the marina

For boats of 12 metres and above, keeping the boat in the marina over winter is often the most practical option. Var marinas offer reduced winter rates compared to high season. The downside is that the boat remains exposed to winter weather, particularly the Mistral which can be severe in the gulf. Securing the mooring lines, protecting sensitive equipment and making regular checks throughout the winter are all essential.

Antifouling and hull work: the essential step

Winter layup is the ideal time for the annual haul-out. The boat is lifted, the hull pressure-washed, the old antifouling layers sanded back and a fresh coat applied. Sacrificial anodes are checked and replaced as needed. It is also the right moment to inspect the propellers, prop shafts, hull fittings and seacocks.

Winter layup checklist

  • Engine: oil change (engine and gearbox), filter replacement, flushing the cooling circuit with antifreeze, checking belts and hoses.

  • Hull: pressure wash, antifouling application, anode check, propeller and shaft inspection.

  • Electronics: disconnect batteries or connect to a maintenance charger, protect screens and sensitive instruments.

  • Interior: clean and dry all surfaces, empty fresh water tanks, leave doors and hatches slightly open to prevent mould.

  • Exterior: fit cockpit cover or shrink wrap, remove detachable elements, protect cushions and upholstery.

Recommissioning in spring

Recommissioning typically takes place between March and May in the Var. This is the time to check all systems after winter, test the engines, inspect safety equipment and make sure your insurance is up to date for the new season. A professional technical inspection before the first outing is strongly recommended.
